Job Overview:
The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking an experienced Research Associate, Agronomist, to review and refine the model for advancing RTC commercialization in alignment with the project’s objectives and to develop a comprehensive framework for monitoring and assessing the transformation and commercialization of the RTC subsector.
The selected candidate will oversee the agronomist aspect of the RTC project. This position will be located at the Bvumbwe, Malawi office and will report directly to the Project Manager and Crop Management Specialist.
About the project:
CIP is executing a project titled Market-led Transformation of the Root and Tuber Crops Subsector in Malawi (RTC-MARKET) for the period. The objective of the initiative is to sustainably enhance the contribution of the RTC subsector to the national economy, food and nutrition security, income generation, and employment opportunities through the commercialization of the subsector. It seeks to reform and commercialize the RTC subsector by enhancing private sector engagement in the RTC value chains. The RTC-Market Project aims to engage a minimum of 60,000 value chain participants through market-driven interventions; generate at least 4,000 employment opportunities, primarily targeting women and youth; and other related initiatives.

Responsibilities of Agronomist Research Associate Jobs in Malawi:
- Collaborate with Government Research Stations to facilitate the production of various classes of potato and sweetpotato seed under containment conditions.
- Assist project participants in establishing and harvesting on-farm seed and root production demonstration plots.
- Offer collaborators technical assistance in establishing and overseeing seed multiplication sites and fields, as well as in the production of roots and tubers.
- Assist the Project Manager with essential tasks including budget management and report preparation.
- Oversee the responsibilities of field technicians, execute additional duties as delegated by the Project Manager, and represent the organization at various functions considered significant.
- Conduct and gather data from trials related to sweetpotato technology development.
- Facilitate the distribution of seeds to beneficiaries.
- Evaluate trial data and prepare comprehensive reports and scholarly publications.
- Assist in the development, implementation, and assessment of collaborative technology products at research sites.
- Develop comprehensive training materials, protocols, and technical documentation for sweetpotato technologies.
- Conduct training sessions for trainers and producers on seed multiplication and root cultivation.
- Perform participatory technology assessments to evaluate the requirements for technology adaptation.

Requirements:
- Master’s degree in an agricultural discipline.
